Memorial Day Parade

The Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade Committee has announced plans for this year's parade. The parade will be held on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 and as always the theme of the parade is "A Time to Honor". The Committee will once again reach out to veterans' groups, schools, community organizations and service clubs alike to invite their participation and to keep the parade a truly unique Royal Oak event.

The parade starts at 9:00 a.m. near Main Street and Harrison, and will head north to Second Street where the traditional post-parade Memorial Service will be held at the Royal Oak Veteran's Memorial between City Hall and the Library. "The parade and the memorial service is an expression of our community's highest honor and regard for our fallen veterans," said Carol Hennessey, Chair of the Committee. As in years past, The Memorial Society will also tend the veterans’ graves at Oak View Cemetery and are seeking individuals and groups of volunteers to help clean the graves on May 12th, and May 19th from 10 until noon and to place US flags next to the graves on May 26th.  

In addition, the traditional Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast at the Farmers Market across the street from the Veterans' Memorial will take place. The breakfast, sponsored by the Royal Oak Historical Society, will be held on Memorial Day from 7:00 am until noon and brings people from all over to enjoy a uniquely Royal Oak experience. Several other special events are planned this year to honor our veterans and the men and women currently serving in the military and children of all ages are invited to "walk with a veteran" in this year's parade.

The parade committee reminds every one of the need for volunteers to help with the parade.
