Road Construction Projects

The City of Royal Oak Engineering Department has tentatively scheduled the following major projects in 2011 for improvements to the City’s infrastructure.

Road Improvements

  • Normandy Ave. between Crooks Rd. and Main St. will receive new concrete pavement and be resurfaced late this summer. This road work is expected to be funded through MDOT and City Act 51 funds. The estimated cost is $895,300.  As of June 13, Normandy eastbound is closed between Crooks and Marais (Quickstead Park) for approximately 3 weeks after which time, Normandy westbound will be closed between Crooks and Marais (Quickstead Park) for approximately 3 weeks.
  • Twelve Mile Rd. between Woodward Ave. and Main St. will be resurfaced late this summer. The estimated cost is $1,517,300. This road work is funded by MDOT and City Act 51.
  • Community Development Block Grant resurfacing or reconstruction of various eligible streets is being considered for streets yet to be determined. The total estimated cost is $520,000.
  • Concrete road repairs will take place on various local streets as necessary in the area bounded by 11 Mile Road, Main St., I-696 and Campbell Road. The total estimated cost is $300,000.

It is the City's intention to minimize any inconvenience associated with these projects and we thank all businesses and residents for their cooperation. Work is to begin this week on Woodward Avenue at 12 Mile Road on a $400,000 project that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) says is intended to improve pedestrian safety in Royal Oak and Berkley.

MDOT: 12 Mile and Woodward Intersection

  • This MDOT construction project is expected to be completed in lamid-September and include:
    • Widening the existing median
    • Upgrading sidewalk ramps to ADA requirements
    • Installing pedestrian cross-walk signals with count down
    • Shortening the entrances to "Michigan Left" turn lanes in order to widen the existing median
  • During construction, the following restrictions will apply:
    • Michigan-Left turn lanes may be closed at anytime.
    • Woodward and 12 Mile single-lane closures may occur at any time. Multiple lane closures will occur during off-peak hours during the week and any time on weekends.
    • For several days surrounding the Woodward Dream Cruise, all lanes on Woodward and 12 Mile will be open from 9 a.m. Aug. 17, and ending at 9 a.m. Aug. 22.
